Within the Lake District national park there are 12 'classic rock' routes
What is a Classic Rock route? Within the Lake District national park there are 12 ‘classic rock’ routes. These range in difficulty from VD – VS and most are on major mountain crags so are full days out. I still remember first looking through its pages and getting excited in anticipation of all the adventures that awaited. All the routes were accessible, but even so I had no intention of rushing through the process, these climbs would be savoured. Although most are on the big mountain crags, there are a few that are suitable for easier days out with short approach walks. Little Chamonix on Shepherds crag and Troutdale Pinnacle on Black crag are the two that spring to mind. We have climbed these many, many times and still love them to this day. But when those good settled weather days adorn the Lakeland fells, it is the high crags that draw us, these are the prize we wait for. To follow in Fred Botterill’s steps on Scafell, or William Parry Hasket Smith on The Napes. Historic climbs indeed, routes that have shaped British mountaineering and will always bring emotion for a climber. You may be ticking your way through this classic tome, or simply want a grand day out on one of Lakelands finest crags. Our guides know all the classic rock routes very well, so you have no route finding to deal with, leaving you with more time to simply enjoy the rock and atmosphere, we’ll do the rest. Some of our guides for these days are affiliated to the Association of Mountaineering Instructors, others are simply highly experienced at their craft and in the Lakeland fells. All are passionate about rock climbing and the mountains, so rest assured you will have a safe and enjoyable day.
Back in 1978 Ken Wilson’s coffee table book ‘Classic Rock’ was published. This highlighted some of the amazing climbs around the UK. The book was part of a trio of publications, with Extreme Rock and Hard Rock making up the series. Both of these concentrated on far more difficult climbs, whilst Classic Rock showcased the more amenable routes.
